Our History
Dr. Thomas A. Brady is the founding father of sports medicine in central Indiana. On Friday nights, you could find Dr. Brady traveling all over the city for Friday Night Football games to ensure that all athletes received proper medical care. Eventually, Dr. Brady opened a walk-in clinic in the basement of Methodist Hospital, where he treated injured athletes at no charge. The need for sports-specific orthopedic care became so great that Dr. Brady, Dr. John McCarroll, Dr. Art Rettig, and Dr. Donald Shelbourne opened the first sports medicine clinic in Indiana, Methodist Sports Medicine, now Forté Sports Medicine and Orthopedics.
As a result of their dedication to injured athletes, the founding partners became widely interested in research. They developed innovative techniques for safely returning injured athletes back to sports sooner than previously thought possible. In 2004, the Methodist Sports Medicine Research & Education Foundation, now the Forté Orthopedic Research Institute, was established, supporting and enhancing the surgeons and physicians’ research, education, outreach, and care initiatives at Forté Sports Medicine and Orthopedics.
